Tapa Clothes

The tapa cloth come  from Airare and Oro in the Northern Province of Papua New Guinea. The material comes from the inner bark of the mulberry tree and is pounded till the fibers are soft and can be joined together by pounding to form a piece of cloth. Then the cloth is sun dried. Design colors are always the same - black, and brick red or burnt orange. Black paint comes from burned coconut husks. For the red paint, the leaves and bark of two trees locally known as saman and dun are boiled together. The longer the boiling process, the darker the red color that is obtained. Many times the red paint is applied hot.

Tapa cloth is a traditional cloth  that were used long before civilization, it is now continuously used on special occasions and some are used for modeling and some are even sold in very high price to be kept in museums. The main Provence of Papua New Guinea where tapa cloth originated is Oro Province.

  1. Your info in regards to the Bark cloths from PNG is not accurate, some of these Tapa cloths are from Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, only a few are from PNG. One of these is owned by me....how can you use my picture?!

  2. I agree with Erica - I'm from Oro and some of the Tapa Cloths above are not from Oro! Cloth IDs: 0049, 0050, 0054, 0055, 0057, 0059, 0060-0063 are not Oro Products. They are not Oro designs and don't look like tapa from Oro.

  3. Hi Jon & Alma, thanks for your feedback. No, I didn't get a reply, but my photo which he used before has been removed... The other tapa cloths are from Tonga, Fiji and Samoa.Obviously the creator of this blog knows very little about tapa cloths at all. (Have a look at the modern printed Hawaiian style shirt which he desribes as: 'Dynamic Design Old Tapa Cloth, from ORO Province Papua New Guinea' LOL. Best to shut this blog down as it contains totally misleading info.
